EC: Over 8 million register to vote

The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced that over eight million persons had been registered by the end of the second phase of the Biometric Voter Registration (BVR), as against 6.5 million persons anticipated.

Biometric Registration Of Prisoners In Limbo

The novelty to register prisoners across Ghana to enable them vote for the first time in the political history of the country has hit a dead-end. Ghana Prisons Service officials are signaling to Citifmonline.com that the inability of the prison inmates to readily produce a form of national identity– a driver’s license, passport, or National Identification card – is making it impossible to carry on with the exercise.

It's an offence to physically stop others from registering - EC Official

Head of Public Affairs at the Electoral Commission, Mr Christian Owusu Pare, has warned that it is illegal for anyone to physically prevent others from taking part in the ongoing biometric registration exercise.

Pockets of violence have been recorded since the exercise began on Saturday. One person was hacked with a machete Sunday in the Brong Ahafo region while a 12-year-old boy sustained gunshot wounds at the Foase Kokoben Electoral area in Kumasi when an agent of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), in an attempt to control some commotion at a polling centre in the Bekwai Constituency, pulled a gun apparently intending to fire a warning shot but injured the boy in the process.

NPP accuses EC, NDC of manipulation

The opposition New Patriotic Party is accusing the Electoral Commission of colluding with the ruling National Democratic Congress to manipulate the biometric registration exercise. A statement signed by Michael Kwabena Ampong, Greater Accra Region Director of Communications said new registration centres have been created without the knowledge of the NPP.
