Afrifa, Kotoka, 1966, Et Al
Saturday, 25 May 2013 04:01
Prof Akosa, the wannabe CPP presidential candidate, who was thrashed by Paa Kwesi Nduom in the 2007 CPP presidential primary, has told us recently that Kotoka’s name on our capital’s international airport is an affront to “democratic Ghana”. It should be removed.
Kotoka is, of course, the name of the colonel who led the 1966 coup that toppled Kwame Nkrumah’s government and the First Republic. Akosa’s statement implies, at least to me, that Nkrumah’s Ghana was “democratic.” For those who lived through Nkrumah’s era, this statement is nothing short of astonishing. It is the rewriting of history on a big scale. It should not be allowed. By the time of his overthrow, Ghana had become a one-party state in which the colours of the one party – the Convention People’s Party (CPP) – had become the nation’s colours, replacing the national colours. The creation of the one-party state had been effected through one of the first, if not the first, of the 90% plus “referenda” that came to characterise the results of “referenda” in post-colonial Africa.
Preliminary Analysis of Petroleum Price Increases
Saturday, 25 May 2013 04:01
The government announced a 30% increase in ex-pump price of petroleum products with the build up covering crude oil price, TOR debt recovery levy, BOST levy, markerting and distribution margins.
There is likely not to be cheap conventional oil any longer . for the past decade, global crude oil output has hovered between 62 million barrels per day and 65 million barrels except in 2006 when it reached 67 million barrels before falling to 65 million barrels and has remained there. At the same time upstream investments are not matching the global supply requirement during to increasing demand. The recent global recovery led by Asia and to some extent Latin America has further put pressure on supply. Global demand is ever increasing and will increase further with the growing global economy. Countries are therefore bracing up to the phenomenon of high oil prices. Some are increasing their efforts at alternative energy mainstreaming and others are introducing conservation programmes.
Mills and Democracy
Saturday, 25 May 2013 04:01
Unfolding events in neighbouring Ivory Coast are clear manifestations of forebodings of what could happen in Ghana after Mills and his NDC have lost in the Parliamentary and Presidential elections in 2012. Mr Emile Short earlier registered his thoughts and on these likely premonitions in Ghana during and after 2012 with worried reference to events that happened in Rwanda; indeed John Mills and his government’s reactions on the Ivorian situation are clear confirmation of what everybody feels about Ghana during and after 2012.
Sam Jonah spells out Ghana's Poverty
Saturday, 25 May 2013 04:01
100 years ago, when the founding father of Adisadel, Bishop Hamlyn, admitted the first intake of students to the SPG grammar school at Topp Yard, even he could not have foreseen the great contribution the school would make to our national development. Throughout the history of Ghana, Santacluasians have been at the forefront of our national development. They were very active in the independence struggle, with some paying dearly for their role in the mobilisation of students for the struggle.
Not surprisingly, on March 6th 1957, 2 santaclausians - Kojo Botsio and K Gbedemah - flanked Kwame Nkrumah at the rally where the independence proclamation was made. Adisadel has produced a Head of State, 3 Chief Justices, 3 Speakers of Parliament, the first Ghanaian Navy Captain among others. The culture of sportsmanship has always been an important part of the school curriculum. The founding fathers considered sports every bit as important as intellectual persuit. Little wonder that over the years, old santaclausians have been active in the promotion and administration of sports at the national level, our illustrious Headmaster, R.T. Orleans Pobee and the late Sam Nelson to mention but a few. By any measure, Adisco has made an immense contribution to the development of the human capital of our nation.
